Rationale for the survey

Being an international student, certainly you want to have a good academic standing and become a successful student with a truly rewarding experience. But in some cases, you find it difficult to take back control of your daily life and your study: Scarcely felt comfortable in a classroom? Struggling with managing your time in the academic environment? Sometimes you feel you do not have any pathways, sometimes you think it is likely that you drop your goals at somewhere far away… These issues could prevent the international student from academic success.


We would like to conduct this survey to evoke discussion about: Barriers to international student’s success in academic pathway. Base on the data collected, we could also recommend some suggestions to students concerning about this topic.

The aim of our study was to explore the experiences of international students in their academic pathway, to reveal the difficulties and challenges faced, and the current support available to them. There are various researches indicating how factors have an influence on the academic pathway of international students. On the one hand, a national survey conducted by Department of Education and Training showed 89% of students were satisfied or very satisfied with their accommodation in Australia (Australian Government 2015). There are a variety of solutions for students to overcome barriers in their academic pathway. Firstly, a practical solution is that they should develop a detailed daily plan to improve their academic outcome and maintain good academic standing at the university. Secondly, it is important for international students to identify campus resources available to support one's academic and personal needs. Nowadays the information world is highly structured and key resources could be found on the shelves of any respectable college or university library, getting students to use scholarly and other resources is a rather straight-forward matter. Access to information resources has now become almost universal and mostly unfettered. Depending on the topic students need to research, they might find that different libraries might serve them better.
